Monday 'Star' Count

Linking up with Jess and her EPP-a-long. My blue blob now weighs 461grams! Not only that, I also basted 116 grams of hexagons.

I'm trying to square it off but at its widest points it is 45 inches by 56 inches. I've been working on this for 11 months now. I'm ready for this to be finished. I wonder how much it will weigh then?

In non-quilting news, I had a bit of a surprise this weekend. My friend Elmo found a box in his office, a box that I had sent him from Vietnam in 2006. It was full of stuff that I somehow thought was worthy of keeping but didn't want to carry as I was cycling around South East Asia. In the box was this gem, a needlepoint kit of the king of Thailand!

The instructions are in Thai but I think I might be up to the challenge. It comes with quite a bit of gold thread.

Labor of Love

Happy Valentine's Day! The NY Mod Quilters did a mini quilt swap with the fantastically talented Minneapolis Modern Guild. The theme was love. I had great ideas for this quilt. In my head, it looked so perfect.

I think this video pretty much sums up what happened.

In the end, the it came out ok. But not as great as the quilt in my head. Here it is, it's called Come on Baby Light my Firework. I'm excited to see the quilt I get in return.

Monday (morning?) Star Count

I Got the Blues!

Over the past two weeks my blue hexie blob has increased to 426g! One thing about the metric system is that it really makes you feel accomplished. 426! That sounds a lot better than 15 oz. I also like tracking my jogging in km; 5 kilometers does sound farther than 3 miles.

Last week (or was it the week before?), some of you showed your sewing kits. What an organized bunch you are! I have adopted the nesting plastic bag strategy. I never really gave much thought to this sewing kit, it just happened out of what was lying around. Thinking about it now, it is strange. Those of you who know me know that plastic bags are one of my pet peeves. I hate how everything is double and triple bagged. I lived in Taiwan for two years, and one of the only things I can say in Mandarin is, 'I don't need a bag'. Yet, here it is, my plastic bag sewing kit.

I keep it simple. Thread, two needles tucked in a contrasting-colored scrap, scissors on a string that I hang around my neck while I'm sewing, binding clips for basting the hexies. I don't use a thimble. I never got the hang of it. 

I also got some requests to see how the blob looks unfolded. Here you go. My sister's size 11 shoes give it some perspective. 

EPP-a-long

I'm going to join the EPP-a-long at Life Under Quilts with my big blue hexie blob. However, because I'm not quilting stars, I'd been wondering how to track my progress. The blob, as you can guess, has been growing and growing in a very disorganized (organic?) way. Then I remembered a thrift store in Toronto called By The Pound. True to it's name, you would pay for second-hand clothes by weight. I bet you can guess where this is going.

How am I going to track my EPP progess? I decided that a kitchen scale was the best way/weigh. 

Currently, the big blue hexie blob weighs 410 grams. My goal for next Monday is 430 grams. I think this is a pretty ambitious goal. 10 basted hexies weigh 9 grams, but once they're in the quilt, I'll take the paper out. I'm guesstimating that an increase of 20 grams equals about about 35 sewn hexies. I'll let you know.

A Peaceful Dresden

David got a stack of polyester dresdens that someone he knew found at a garage sale. Who would want to get rid of a polyester dresden? David passed these out as a challenge. I didn't get a chance to take a 'before' picture. But here is the finished block. I decided to let the fabric tell the story of its era.

Once I had a t-shirt that said 'Hippies Smell'. Now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense. Of course they smelled bad. They were wearing polyester just like this:

I used the foolproof zigzag applique technique. The patches were purchased for a few dollars in an embroidery shop in the garment district. Thanks for the challenge David. Peace man!

Happy EPP New Year!

Let's start 2014 off right with a little EPP. Last April I started these hexies as a little quilting project that I could take with me on a trip to Denmark. I chose blue because I never use blue. I don't think I've ever made a blue quilt. This project started without a plan, as some good quilts tend to do.

I was wondering what to do with these blue hexies when I saw a poster on the East River Ferry. The poster showed old photographs of a big boat dumping old subway cars into the water. Did you know that old subway cars are used to create artificial reefs? Well, now you do.

Looking at the posters, I thought back to the Titanic and how underwater photos of the decay were a pretty aqua color. But I was already several months into piecing the randomly blue hexies. So, now the plan is to make a 'solid' blue hexie quilt with some pretty aqua-colored decaying subway cars appliqued at the bottom.

It is taking forever! But it is almost the size of a yoga mat now.
